Floating Into Calm: My First Float Spa Experience
Have you ever tried a float spa? I recently had the opportunity to experience one for the first time, and let me tell you—it was a game-changer. My body feels better than it has in a long time, and the effects have lasted far beyond the session itself. In this post, I’ll share my experience, the fascinating science behind floating, and why it might just be the ultimate tool for stress relief and nervous system balance.
My First Float Spa Experience:
This all started with a thoughtful gift from a friend. I was a little hesitant at first—floating in a tank of water in what I imagined would be complete darkness sounded a bit… intense. But as soon as I stepped into the serene environment of the float spa, with it’s serene atmosphere, I knew I was in for something special.
The water was body temperature, apparently infused with hundreds of pounds of Epsom salts to make floating effortless. I was able to choose soft lighting, calming sounds, or complete silence. I tried it all, and the result was a profound sense of calm and clarity.
The next day, and for a number of days afterwards, I felt like a new person—light, energized, and deeply relaxed. It reminded me of the effects of hypnosis: a mental and physical reboot that left me feeling balanced and in control.
The Science Behind Floating:
I was very curious about how this experience could have such a powerful effect. I wanted to know how it lead to feelings amazing. Here’s what I learned about the biological mechanisms behind the positive effects of floating:
Deep Parasympathetic Activation (Rest & Repair Mode):
Firstly, floating gently can trigger a gentle but profound parasympathetic response. This is the “rest and repair” mode of your nervous system, the opposite of fight-or-flight. This is probably why I felt calm yet energized—my nervous system had rebalanced without tipping into deep relaxation fatigue.Magnesium Absorption & Muscle Relaxation:
The Epsom salts in the water are rich in magnesium sulfate, which is known for:✨ Relaxing muscles and reducing tension
✨ Supporting nervous system function
✨ Potential transdermal absorption (especially in warm water)
Even if only a small amount of magnesium was absorbed, the high-density saltwater helped me release stored tension in my body - without causing dehydration or fatigue. (No pruning of the fingers!)Bioelectric Rebalancing & Floating Effects:
Mild Sensory Deprivation → Heightened Body Awareness: Floating removes gravitational compression from joints, allowing cerebrospinal fluid and lymphatic flow to be optimized. I didn’t know that was even a thing until I researched this tope. It could explain the subtle buzzing sensation I felt—a sign of increased circulation, neural activity, and body “recalibration.”
Potentially Enhanced Vagal Tone: Floating may have stimulated my vagus nerve, contributing to a state of relaxed energy rather than deep sedation - which I loved.
Similarity to Ice Baths, Intense Yoga, or Certain Kinds of Breathwork:
✨ Ice baths create a post-cold “afterglow” effect due to norepinephrine release.
✨ Deep yoga (especially long holds with breathwork) can heighten “interoception”—that internal buzzing sensation of energy realignment (I like the sound of realigning my nervous system.)
✨ In that wasy, it seems to be siimilar to breathwork - like the Wim Hof method I’ve enjoyed in the past, where I’ve also experienced the intense feeling of relaxation and pleasant buzzing.
✨ The float session likely mimicked these effects in a more gentle, sustained way.
What This Might Mean for You:
✨ If you’ve been feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or just curious about trying something new, floating might be worth exploring. Here’s why:
✨ You might enjoy help with regulating your nervous system, making it a great tool for managing stress and anxiety.
✨ Physical relaxation is such a treat and floating like this makes it effortless. This can benefit everything from muscle tension to blood pressure regulation.
✨ It’s a gentle, effective way to create a sense of balance and calm without causing fatigue.
Some Final Thoughts:
My first float spa experience was nothing short of transformative and I can hardly wait to go again. It reminded me of the power of giving my nervous system the chance to truly relax and reset, like through yoga, long meditation retreats, or massage. Whether you’re looking for a new stress-reduction tool or simply want to treat yourself to some much-needed self-care, I highly recommend giving floating a try. Maybe I’ll see you there!
