Navigating Solitude, Finding Connection and Resilience: My Pandemic Journey
Early Days of the Pandemic
I vividly recall the early days of the pandemic. In March 2020, I found myself on one of the last planes out of Maui. As my friend dropped me off at my doorstep, I braced myself for the unknown challenges ahead. Little did I know, it would involve navigating a world of solitude and uncertainty. Mental health awareness had long been a focus in my work, and now, making wellness a priority was more crucial than ever.
Adapting to a New Normal
During those surreal mornings, I sought solace in my favorite cafe, now adapted to 'contactless' service. The cancellation of my health education classes and MBSR sessions, along with the shifting work landscape, forced me to pivot. Thankfully, a writing contract kept me grounded as I completed my book, 'Mindfulness Meditations for Stress: 100 Simple Ways to Reduce Stress and Find Peace.' Yet, something deeper was stirring within me—a transition toward a new life direction.
Embracing Hypnotherapy
As a middle-aged adult, hypnotherapy had long intrigued me. In 2020, I turned to it to address persistent health issues. With prior training in hypnosis, encouragement from friends led me to pursue it professionally. Enrolling in courses with the Ali Campbell Hypnotherapy Academy and the Dave Elman Hypnosis Institute became transformative, allowing me not only to explore hypnotherapy for personal growth but also to fulfill a long-delayed dream of diving deeper into hypnosis.
Navigating the Frontiers of the Digital World
The pandemic pushed many of us online, where I found myself teaching brain health classes for veterans and older adults, helping them adapt to the digital age. Beyond acquiring new skills, navigating unfamiliar technologies online reshaped how I work. It also led to new avenues to connect with others, both professionally and personally, fostering even some unexpected friendships and networking opportunities that continue to enrich my life.
Discovering Connections Amidst Isolation
Venturing out for groceries became a poignant experience, as I discovered newfound connections with strangers. Even behind masks, I could sense smiles and shared humanity. Interacting with the clerk at the store, the owners of local businesses like Yolo Fruit Stand, or familiar faces at the coffee shop provided solace during times of perceived isolation. I notice that now when I now visit the Yolo Fruit Stand, there’s still a sense of added warmth between us that I don’t think would have developed if not for the challenges of the pandemic.
Looking Ahead with Gratitude
Looking ahead, I am mindful that change seldom comes without its challenges. I also know that during these times, the challenges will shape me - sometimes even amid the setbacks. Overcoming obstacles has strengthened my resilience, boosted my confidence in connecting with others, and deepened my appreciation for the smallest gestures of kindness. May we all find strength in resilience and through connection. Together, we can grow and thrive, even amidst adversity. Still facing challenges to your own confidence and resilience?
